FAQs

Can I use my apprenticeship program to support other roles in my setting?

Yes, you can use apprenticeships to support a variety of job roles. Common positions in schools may include business administration, ICT technician, and team leader/supervisor roles.

What are the costs?

For levy-paying employers, the full cost of the apprenticeship is covered by funds from your digital account.

For non-levy paying employers, the government fully covers the costs of apprenticeship training for apprentices aged 16 to 18 years old. For apprentices aged 19 and over, the government funds 95% of the training costs, while the employer is responsible for the remaining 5%. For example, the Teaching Assistant apprenticeship costs £7,000, so the employer would contribute £350.

Is there any additional grant funding available?

There is grant funding available. The employer receives a grant of £1,000 to help support apprentices aged 16-18.

How much should I pay an apprentice?

Apprentices are considered employees and are subject to National Minimum Wage regulations. There is a specific rate for apprentices, which is currently set at a minimum of £6.40 per hour. Employers have the flexibility to establish a pay rate provided it meets or exceeds the minimum wage.

The apprenticeship minimum wage applies for the entire duration of the apprenticeship for those aged 16 to 18 years old. An apprentice who is 19 or older can be paid the apprenticeship minimum wage for the first 12 months of their apprenticeship; thereafter, they must receive at least the national minimum wage for their age group.

What is "Off the job training"?

Off-the-job training (OTJT) is a statutory requirement for an English apprenticeship, where 6 hours of the apprentice’s paid week must be dedicated to this training. The training provider must ensure that the OTJT delivered to the apprentice aligns with the following definition:

The apprenticeship minimum wage applies for the entire duration of the apprenticeship for those aged 16 to 18 years old. An apprentice who is 19 or older can be paid the apprenticeship minimum wage for the first 12 months of their apprenticeship; thereafter, they must receive at least the national minimum wage for their age group.
