Why put your workforce through an apprenticeship?
- Staffing needs: With diverse roles ranging from teaching staff to administrative staff.
- Budget constraints: Maximising resources while maintaining educational standards.
- Talent Development: Ensuring staff have opportunities for growth and professional development.
The apprenticeship levy presents a significant opportunity to invest in your most valuable asset: your people. Yet, many organisations struggle to fully leverage this funding, leaving potential growth and development on the table.
In the context of your school or trust, maximising this spend is not just a fiscal responsibility but a strategic priority.
Apprenticeships are not just for entry-level positions; they are a dynamic tool for developing talent across all levels of a school or multi academy trust.

We are Ofsted Outstanding
“Apprentices thoroughly enjoy their training because leaders take great care to match them with an employer that will develop their character and interests. Apprentices quickly develop deep and complex new knowledge and practical skills. As a result, apprentices become highly valued and useful members of staff, quickly carrying out meaningful tasks independently.”

FAQs
Yes, you can use apprenticeships to support a variety of job roles. Common positions in schools may include business administration, ICT technician, and team leader/supervisor roles.
For levy-paying employers, the full cost of the apprenticeship is covered by funds from your digital account.
For non-levy paying employers, the government fully covers the costs of apprenticeship training for apprentices aged 16 to 18 years old. For apprentices aged 19 and over, the government funds 95% of the training costs, while the employer is responsible for the remaining 5%. For example, the Teaching Assistant apprenticeship costs £7,000, so the employer would contribute £350.
There is grant funding available. The employer receives a grant of £1,000 to help support apprentices aged 16-18.
Apprentices are considered employees and are subject to National Minimum Wage regulations. There is a specific rate for apprentices, which is currently set at a minimum of £6.40 per hour. Employers have the flexibility to establish a pay rate provided it meets or exceeds the minimum wage.
The apprenticeship minimum wage applies for the entire duration of the apprenticeship for those aged 16 to 18 years old. An apprentice who is 19 or older can be paid the apprenticeship minimum wage for the first 12 months of their apprenticeship; thereafter, they must receive at least the national minimum wage for their age group.
Off-the-job training (OTJT) is a statutory requirement for an English apprenticeship, where 6 hours of the apprentice’s paid week must be dedicated to this training. The training provider must ensure that the OTJT delivered to the apprentice aligns with the following definition:
The apprenticeship minimum wage applies for the entire duration of the apprenticeship for those aged 16 to 18 years old. An apprentice who is 19 or older can be paid the apprenticeship minimum wage for the first 12 months of their apprenticeship; thereafter, they must receive at least the national minimum wage for their age group.
