Employers love apprenticeships for their ability to upskill existing employees without hiring new staff. By developing talent internally, companies save on recruitment costs and retain valuable institutional knowledge.

Plus, apprenticeships are government funded making them cost-effective for businesses, with government support covering a significant portion of training costs—even for existing employees.

For example, the Software Development Apprenticeship (level 3) is a £15,000 qualification, but the government will fund either 95% or 100% of this depending on the apprentice’s age. Meaning at most your employer would pay £750. Add in the apprenticeship levy for larger employers or local initiatives like levy transfers and it’s unlikely your employer will need to contribute at all.

This means all your employer needs to do is give you time to learn and apply your skills in your role.
