Software Development Technician – Level 3

Introduction

Software development technicians are the supportive entry level team member helping to create computer programs. Some assist in developing the applications that allow people to do specific tasks on a computer or another device. Others assist in developing the underlying systems that run the devices or that control networks. For example, a software development technician may work to support a software developer or wider team on Transport ticketing systems, traffic light control systems, customer-facing websites for journey planning and account management, internal websites for monitoring the status of train and road networks. They may assist in developing software to create bespoke asset management systems.

Who is this apprenticeship right for?

The role of software development technician would be ideal for anyone seeking a first appointment for a career in software design and development. You will have strong analytical skills and troubleshooting skills, enjoying working out puzzles or how to perform complex tasks as essentially you will work out how the computer can perform specific tasks to meet user needs.

The skills, knowledge and behaviours (KSBs) learnt will allow you to work in organisations ranging from large multi-nationals, public sector bodies and government projects developing multi-billion-pound software solutions to support key projects to small consultancy firms designing bespoke software solutions for clients. You will provide solution for a wide range of industries including Financial Services, Transport, Security, Games, Education and Defence

Employer Contribution

£750 for non-levy employers (Non-Levy contribution applies to employers with an annual wage bill of under £3m and enrolling apprentices that are aged 22 and above upon apprenticeship start date)

How will this be delivered?

This apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of work-based learning, online training sessions or face to face sessions. You will build a portfolio of work you have created to evidence your skills. When ready to finish your apprenticeship, you will sit an end point assessment – but don’t worry you will have loads of support to prepare for this.
