Challenges: Without much experience in formal job interviews or business settings, Charlie faced the challenge of transitioning from retail to a more dynamic and client-facing role. He had to quickly adapt to networking, meeting potential clients, and managing business accounts. His apprenticeship at Excellect played a critical role in bridging this gap by giving him hands-on experience in business admin, client management, and communication.
Approach: During his apprenticeship, Charlie was entrusted with responsibilities such as face-to-face networking, telephone and Zoom meetings, and managing a client portfolio. He demonstrated ambition and quickly identified gaps in the company’s offerings, particularly in the area of private medical insurance for individuals. Recognising this opportunity, Charlie took on the account manager role in this area and successfully expanded his skills and client base over the following three years.
Outcome: In late 2023, after gaining confidence and experience, Charlie decided to establish his own company, HowHa PMI, focusing on private medical insurance. His apprenticeship experience had equipped him with the skills, confidence, and entrepreneurial drive necessary to transition from an employee to a business owner.
Conclusion: Charlie’s journey highlights the value of apprenticeships in building foundational business skills, growing professional networks, and fostering entrepreneurial aspirations. By leveraging the skills and experience gained through his apprenticeship, Charlie was able to successfully start his own business and establish himself in the competitive private medical insurance industry.
